These past few weeks have been FLYING by! I haven’t had time to barely sleep, let alone write in this blog. I am absolutely LOVING it!!! We celebrated Valentine’s Day last week and had a blast. I am getting used to the routine and the student’s love me. They trust me and ask for my help. I love being there and really hate leaving. I’m nervous to switch placements in mid March but I’m also excited to see what 5th grade has to offer. So far I take care of reading centers and I do little things here and there like grade journals, make the class line up, walk around while they do seat work, read with students on the floor during SSS and make bulletin boards. I have also had the chance to do a few reading lessons with the whole group but just what the teacher tells me to do. (Which is just read from the book…) not my idea of a good lesson but hey. So far I love it. I’m only in this classroom until March 9th
and I’m already sad thinking about leaving. I can’t wait until my internship 2!

Tuesday the 17th was my first day at my school placement. I was incredibly nervous and arrived there way too early. I finally met my supervising teacher at 8am and we talked until the students arrived at 8:35. She seems helpful and welcoming. The first day I really just observed to see what the student’s personalities were like and who was talkative, reserved, and who were the behavior issues in the class. Overall I don’t think the day could have gone any better. I’m VERY relieved but now I can start worrying about my second placement with the “Dr.” yikes.

Today was my internship orientation. It began at an ungodly hour and only lasted about an hour and a half so I’m not sure why it started so early… I wore new shoes and parked in the farthest parking garage from the student union I could because I usually like walking and it was nice outside. BUT! I didn’t know the back of my ankles would be bloody by the time I reached the student union. Lesson learned: buy quality shoes and don’t walk across campus in new ones. I think people were staring at my bloody feet during orientation…so gross.
After the rocky start things got better. I got my first and second placements for internship I. I was placed at Walker Elementary in first grade and then fifth grade later on. First grade scares me a
little bit but we’ll see. I still think the teachers are the biggest factor. I looked the teachers up online and they look…intense. Haha, but what does a picture say? Only a thousand words right? Just kidding. I’m sure they’ll be helpful and welcoming (fingers crossed). I start on the 17th and more updates will come after then. I’m excited, nervous, scared, and every emotion in between. I cannot wait to begin though!

So, I haven’t updated in a while and that’s simply because nothing has really changed, internship wise. I have my orientation on the 10th at 8:30 am. There, I learn which school I am being placed in and, more importantly, which grade level I am being placed in for my first placement. I can get k-6. I am hoping for pretty much anything OVER 2nd. As the days wind down though I am realizing that kindergarten wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. I just know I don’t want to teach kindergarten, so I want experience in the grades that I DO want to teach. So I’ll update after my internship and again after my first day (the 17th)

So I decided I wanted to make a blog about my internship I and II experiences and anything else that goes on between now and then. I’m just finishing my Fall semester, my last real semester of classes. I’m actually really bummed college went so fast. I’m excited to start my spring semester and start my block of classes and most importantly, my internship! I don’t find out which school my placement is at or which grade I get until January 10th. I’m so nervous about the whole process. I was nervous enough just filling out the application for the internship and getting my finger prints done for Seminole County Schools. I think it’ll be a really cool experience though. I feel like the biggest factor is going to be the supervising teacher though. I have done a lot of service learning and it always depends on the teacher- if its a good experience or not. We shall see. In the mean time I’m finishing up my last real classes and getting books and things for my future classroom ready because I’m insane. I posted on craigslist a few months ago asking for book donations for my future classroom. I actually got quite a few responses and was able to collect about 100/125 books from the second-sixth grade level. Pretty awesome. My mom has also given me a TON of books that my sisters and I had when we were little.

The more classes I take, the more I want to teach older grades like middle school. So I MAY have to donate these books to someone else in the future…oops. We’ll see after the internships I suppose. I made this classroom name sign the other day…because I’m a bum and have nothing to do from about 5pm-10pm on most weeknights. I also have a few buckets for books, a tin for random pens and pencils to put by my desk and literacy circle bookmarks. Tryin’ to get a head start.
